Terry Callier fait partie de ces artistes injustement oubliés et redécouverts sur le tard. Une voix légendaire, voluptueuse qu'il mit au service d'une fusion folk, soul et jazz. Une de ces voix soul qui touchent votre âme et qui s'est éteinte ce dimanche 28 octobre 2012. L'auteur de "The New Folk Sound of Terry Callier" avait 67 ans.

Né à Chicago en 1945, Terrence Orlando Callier dit Terry Callier, commence le piano à trois ans puis adolescent chante dans des orchestre de doo wop. Charles Stepney du label Chess lui fait enregistrer son premier single "Look at me now" en 1962. Mais c'est sur le label Prestige qu'il enregistre en 1964 "The New Folk Sound of Terry Callier". Ayant peu de moyen mis à sa disposition il choisi alors la formule 2 contrebasses. Une idée tirée de l'album "Meditations" de John Coltrane qu'il admire et à qui il rendra hommage sur "Can’t catch the Trane".
Le producteur d'It’s about time (titre d'origine) disparait avec les bandes, il faudra attendre trois ans pour la sortie du chef-d'oeuvre. Trop tard selon l'artiste, le folk n'est plus à la mode, c'est un échec. Ses cinq albums sortis dans les années 70 dont les sublimes "What Color Is Love" et "I Just Can't Help Myself" connaîtront le même sort. Devant élever sa fille l'artiste abandonne la musique et devient informaticien.
